Question: I have a 75 FJ40 and there seems to be a heavy amount of gas fumes in the cab. I'm getting
headaches from this and has ever since, stop driving it. What could be causing the heavy
fumes? Do I need a new gas tank? Has anyone else experience this before? Any insights will
be appreciated. Thanks
Answer: I noticed a gas smell in my 1978 FJ40. I checked my charcoal canister and
discovered that the line connecting to the bottom of the canister is broken,
and definitley smells like gas. Haven't fixed it yet, but took the top off for
summer!
Hope that helps,
TJS

Answer: There is a roll over check valve under a metal cover on the inside of the tub, on the other side
of the fuel filler location. i found one of the plastic nipples broken off on mine and this is where
my gas smell was coming from. found someone that had a used one, don't know where you
would get a new one
Answer: Check your sending unit and where it is attatched to the top of the tank. I hunted forever and
although it was never visibly "damp", when I sniff tested it, the smell was obvious. Once I
replaced the gasket around the sending unit the smell decreased 100 times!
Answer: My problem was an incorrect gas cap. Make sure you have a vented/unvented whichever your
year calls for. Good luck.
Answer: I just went through the same thing just last week, I was checking my return fuel line when I
notice gas dripping from the underside below the gas tank. I removed the tank to find it had
rusted through. You might want to look there first.
