Question: 81 FJ40 with the stainless steel aisin locking hubs. One side will not twist all the way to the
locked position. Has anybody had this problem? Did a rebuild fix it or did you have to buy a
new unit? Thanks in advance for any help.
Answer: Several things to check:
Does the hub hit a solid hard place when you turn them?
Did you put it in 4WD before you locked the hubs?
If the answer is yes: Sometimes when you turn the hubs to lock them there are parts that
have to mesh for the locking parts to lock in place. So sometimes you need to rock back and
forth etc. to let them move some so that they align.
Also sometimes the front axle being engaged before the hubs are loced will loand up the axle
and make things stiff.
If it comes to a soft stop then maybe the hub centers are tight; lack of grease, extremely cold
weather, (stiff grease), ice, swollen o-rings, dirt-mud etc.
The hubs can be cleaned and packed with only gaskets and
grease. Of cours new gaskets are nice to use but you dont't need a rebuild kit to diagnos the
problem.
They are very simple to remove and clean, and I have reused old gaskets in a pinch but would
rather replace them.
My hubs are very old and long sine discontinued and Warn does not even have kits for them
but gaskets are available.
Mine have been cleaned and packed 6-8 times and never rebuilt. On the opther hand kits will
make them like new
yet they should be packed every so often.
