Question: Can anyone help with some advice. I have a 77 fj40. My instrument panel lights are very dim even when turned up all the way. How many lights behind the panel? Are they easy to get to? Can you put a stronger bulb in? Help, I need some advice. Thanks
Answer: Instrument Lights Brightness Fix
1st - make sure the head light pull dimmer switch is turned all the way up for brightness.
Next - pull apart the gauge cluster after removing it from the dash. Clip off the two pieces of metal (shields) obstructing the two dash bulbs. Clean the glass and the bulbs.
While you've got things apart, you may want to try brighter bulbs. Get some Wagner 176L - makes a big difference, they are 5 candle power.
Only 2 bulbs are needed to make the cluster brighter. The others are for high beam indicator and turn signals. No need to make those are brighter -
