Question: I'm wondering if any of you know an easy way to tweak the front seat situation. I'm 6'4" and I
sit like I'm in a yoga class when I'm driving. It's hard to reach zen, because after 30 minutes I
have to use my left foot to press the gas pedal, while my right leg is stretched across the
passenger side. Can I just put some thin steel panels under the tracks to push it back some more, or will that
interfere with the back seat when folding down?
Any of you have this problem?
Answer: I assume your are talking about the seats in a FJ40. I have a 76 FJ40 that was modified by
the previous owner that had the same problem and wore cowboy boots most of the time. The
modification he made was to unbolt the seat and disconnect the post that is at the left front
corner of the seat. He then turned that post 180 degrees so that the top was now further back.
Next he drilled a new mounting hole in the right side of the seat track thus allowing the entire
seat assembly to be remounted about 4" back. It also required that the brackets at the back
of the seat both be rotated 180 degrees also. If you are having trouble following my poor
directions, send me an e-mail and we can discuss further. I can take measurements if
needed.
