Valve Adjustments, 1972, F-Motor, Q/A

Question: I need to adjust my valves. I have removed the spark plugs and can not figure out how to rotate the engine except by using the starter. This is sloppy at best. I can barely fit my hand between the crank pulley and the fan shroud. The motor in question is a stock F in my '72.

thanks, Randy

Answer: Randy, Reach down and grab the crank pulley with your hands. If you are in neutral and your plugs are out it's easy.

Have a light aimed at your flywheel port hole to see when you hit TDC, it will be a straight line. The BB is 7°BTDC, which is for timing the ignition.

On one of the TDCs, you adjust valves

1 2 3 5 7 9

Then you rotate 360° and adjust

4 6 8 10 11 12

Intake should be .008" and exhaust .014", hot or as warm as they can be however fast you can pull the valve cover and tweak them up.

Answer: Pushing in 4th gear is pretty easy since the ratio is 1:1 (manual trans only)
